I was born in chicago, moved to wheeling when i was 1 yr old. went to kindergarden for 1/2 yr at the old church next to the fire/police station. ours was th e last class there. Mrs Painting was the teacher. the second half yr i had was at St Marks. your site is nice, because it brings back a lot of memories. went to Mark Twain, Jack London, and of course WHS. been back from time to time and am amazed and disappointed at the growth. the sign entering wheeling use to say 'WHEELING Where progress is by the people.' i guess that wasn't good enough for later government, and changed it to something pretty lame.

My Dad's father was pastor of the Lutheran Church there (St Mark's), Frederick G. Alpers. I have been going through my father's things and my dad referenced a story about a place that got shot up for moonshine (Dague or Dangue?/). He had mentioned that his dad had comforted the family regarding their loss. Do you folks have any knowledge of such an event? Let me know. Anyways, thank you for your site and your time----Marlyn
